“Polarization” is Merriam-Webster’s 2024 word of the year, and for good reason. Our nation is divided like never before. We spend more time in digital echo chambers than we do with our neighbors, family, and friends. In Kentucky, those divisions are exacerbated by chronic disinvestment in our state that enhances regionalism and rural-urban tensions, leaving many of our Commonwealth’s most pressing issues unaddressed. Solving those issues will require connecting disparate regions with varied social, economic, and cultural histories to align towards a shared future.

Despite that, many Kentuckians are working to overcome divisions and connect communities. The profiles and stories you’ll read about within are ones of resilience, of creating and caring for community, of investing in a place with love and intention. They demonstrate what we already know and are excited to share with you: Kentucky is — and has always been — worth fighting for. We hope you’ll join us in that fight.
